Robert Holbrook, Managing Director of Admiral Yacht Insurance, is well placed to consider not only his own lessons from crossing the Pacific but also those accumulated by Admiral’s policyholders during their own adventures across the globe. Many of the lessons learnt are as relevant in the Solent as on the approach to Brittany or the Marquesas.
As an aid to your safety, our Claims Manager Bob Samuels has drawn on Robert’s experience to produce a series of tips on sailing safe.
Tip #3: Proceed With Caution
Modern yacht bows with their twin anchor rollers and stowed anchor flukes are ideal for digesting other yacht gelcoat and stanchions when they get to meet.
The next time you enter an unfamiliar marina, or indeed your own, proceed with caution and watch for unexpected eddies and back wash that could result in close encounters with other moored yacht owners – not the best way to introduce yourself.
Don’t try and keep up with the marina RIB showing you to your visitors berth. He can swing tighter and faster and stop sooner than you in your well armed yacht poised to wreak galvanised blade havoc.
Pause, observe, plan, and creep to your well earned rest.
